Cycle to Work
One of the best ways to encourage cycling would be to encourage the concept of Cycling to Work.
Tredz a Bike Store from the UK seems to have this concept down pat with their CycleToWork initiative. Would be really nice if we could implement something like this in Bangalore. Its a pretty interesting read, with proper numbers to substantiate why cycling to work actually makes sense for both the Employer as well as the Employee.
To most folks, cycling to work may seem inappropriate, but the irony is that once you do, its difficult to imagine how you can ever use a motorbike or a car to get to work.

Rohan, I hope sometime it becomes a "trend" in bangalore. Let's see.

I think that this is a wonderful idea and why do i say that !! Because i have been doing this for the past 1 year. Agreed, the distance between my home and office is only 5 kms ( Airport Road to Bagamane tech Park, C.V.Raman Nagar) but hey ! its a start. Advantages 1. Helps me in at least boasting to others that i am a lil bit fitter than them, 2. Low maintenance 3. Big Boost in maintaining the environment. If we cannot better it, at least we should not be contributing to the pollution. Keep Going Guys, and may the tribe increase !

Oh and by the way Rohan, please have someone to act as moderator so that no one can post abusive language on the blogs.

Nice initiative. Would like to see something in Delhi/NCR also.

Guys, I read about you on ibnlive.com. I think it is a wonderful idea to cycle to work. I cannot do so, coz i live in Banashankari 3 stage and it would take me a lot of time to cycle to Marthahalli(where i work). But I will surely buy a cycle and make sure i will use my cycle whenever i travel around close by areas atleast. Hope many more will catch up with your idea of cycling to work. Also, the cycles that you have on your site arent a bit expensive?. Can i know, why they are so expensive?

It is a fantastic initiative. I read it on ibnlive.com. Hope this catches on with other techies too and make Bangalore free from pollution. Cycling is definitely good for body, spirit, mind and of course less traffic jams and no pollution. In Amsterdam, the cycling is the way of life. You can seen all walks of life young, old, women using it and all throughout the year. Surprisingly, most of the people were using simple cycles with no gears or techno. Since Bangalore temperature is good all-round the year, it would be ideal place for cycling. I would also recommend cycle helmets to be used during the commutation, as this is Indian traffic. This would defiantly encourage others too. More awareness is needed to create a trendy way of life. Way to go !

My initial experiences with the Firefox "bike station" in Malad, Mumbai, wasn't particularly edifying. Some days ago I tried the landline mentioned on the Firefox website (022-55816286) and got a message saying the Tata Indicom number has changed. The alternative (a mobile number) was constantly engaged, so I decided to visit the place 10 km away though it was late evening. Took me almost an hour by bus. The shop looked rather cramped from the outside (which is okay; I didn't expect a vast showroom), and all I could see were two rows of Hamilton cycles on the grimy pavement outside. Just how many brands do these "exclusive" stations stock anyway? :) It started raining just then, so I didn't enter - I thought I'll do a proper visit + trial ride later, during the daytime. I'll keep you posted on how Project Firefox goes. Or maybe I should call it Project Trek, because I've set my eye on a T-3700.

Hi, It is certainly a wonderful iniative, what with Bangalore roads getting more & more crowded by four wheelers (I am told Bangalore adds 900 four wheelers to its total tally) everyday. Wearing cycling helments should be made mandatory from the begining itself since the other users of the road ( 4/2 wheelers, autos, bus etc) are likely to let loose their road-rage on the "BI-CYCLE" users. Bangalore's young and fit IT Janatha should take to this immediately to show to themselves that they care for (1) Their health and (2) Their care for the envioronment.

I think its a great idea, but companies should reward employees with appriciation for coming to office in bicycles .This will encourage people to use bicycles to office. I like the idea riding let it be bikes or motorbikes... But my problem is i have to dress in proper formal wear to office which is a big hindrence to cycling to office. Any ideas ??
-
I don't think it would be great hinderer even if you have to wear formals to office, as you can wear cycling suit when you are cycling and change into Formals when you reach office.......

I think this is a brilliant idea!!! I read about you guys on ibnlive. Recently there was an article in HINDU on this where this concept has started in Paris as well. I am based out of Chennai. I wish we could do something like this in Chennai. Would love to be part of it. Please keep going.

The idea of cycling has always been there in European contries where in most of the places they have dedicated cycling tracks. No doubt this initiative is a win win situation for all of us. Cheers!!

I'm work at Tredz and first of all I'd like to say thanks for the link. We really appreciate it. Second, we certainly haven't got it right in Europe (or at least Britain) yet. Cars are still considered the most important and most adult way to travel here. The idea of riding a bike is seen to be childish or strange by so many people in this country which is riduculous. We need to educate our kids and shame our adults into cycling. If not for their health than for the health of their loved ones and the planet. Best of luck from the Tredz office in Britain.
