Fun Sustainable Transport

Packing your bike for travel

written by nikhil on March 17th, 2008 @ 04:12 PM

I want to ride in a place of my choice and I need to transport my bike there, how the !@#$ do I do it???

Have we done it before? But of course…

We found a nice illustration of how it is to be done here.

However, here’s a list of things to keep in mind, some of which we learnt from our mistakes:

1. Deflate tyres – air travel may not allow fully inflated tyres.
2. Axle protector to be installed in front fork – protects fork from damage.
3. Remove handle bar, turn fork inwards (rotate 180 degrees), flip headset so that it points down – saves space and protects fork mounts.
4. Pedals out – reduces width.
5. Saddle off – reduces height.
6. With the bike resting on the fork and the front wheel off, the wheel should be placed to the left of the bike. Move the front wheel carefully such that the hub is within the main triangle of the frame, and the left crank arm does not bend the spokes.
7. Important – Protect your rear derailleur with a protector.
8. Use bubble wrap generously :)
9. Make sure the weak/damaged regions in the box are securely taped.

Have fun!

Well I don't know of dismantling my bike to take it to a place far far away and ride. But I do dream of having a bicycle rack on my Scorpio so that I could just prop the bike on the vehicle and drive away. I have seen (in Europe) two types - one that allows the bike to be mounted on top of a car/SUV (Car Roof Rack) and the other - which I would prefer - to the rear of the car/SUV (. See what I mean here: http://www.bikerackshops.com) I wonder if it is available in India. Got to surf the net.

hey Amitabh, you can pick up bicycle racks from Thule. They have an office on Lavelle road, near Java city or they are also available in Adventure One opp SBI near St Marks Road.

Thanks ROhan (why "RO"? why not "Ro"). I will definitely check it out. I noticed that som eof the vehicles have a roof top rack for luggahe and they are Thule. So I guessed that they must be somewhere around in Bangalore! I hope they are not very expensive.
